Drinking Age Persuasive Speech

By a show of hands, how many of you are under the age of 21? Just by looking around, we can see that a majority of us are under the legal age of alcohol consumption. There are 10.1 million underage drinkers in the United States. With that said, we can mentally conclude that some, if not most of us have tried booze. According to Prof. Rosenberg of the Psychological Bulletin 1993, “alcohol is the most serious problem facing teenagers.”
By viewing countless news articles and web sources, I have grasped a firm understanding of the pros and cons of underage drinking. This topic is relatable and informative about the negative impact that alcohol poses on the youth. I will brief you about the medical repercussions, the dangers, access to minors, as well as the right to drink.

I. Beginning with medical ramifications,
A. Alcohol consumption interferes with development of the young adult brain's hippocampus and prefrontal lobes
1. The prefrontal lobe goes through the most changes during adolescence
a. Responsible for thinking, decision-making, planning and impulse control
2. The hippocampus suffers the most from under age alcohol consumption
a. Responsible for learning and memory

B. Through an interview I conducted with someone who wishes to remain anonymous, I informed them of the effects that alcohol has on the undeveloped brain. They then said “I wish we had as many commercials protesting underage drinking as we do commercials promoting alcohol.” Over all, exposing the brain to alcohol during this period of growth interrupts key processes of brain development, possibly leading to mild cognitive impairment as well as to further escalation of drinking.
