Task SHC 33

Diversity – the differences in values, attitudes, cultures, nations, languages, beliefs, skills and life experiences of the individual in any group of people. Equality – does not mean that everyone has to be treated the same. People have different needs, ambitions and situations. Every child should have equality of opportunity. This means opening up access for every child and family in participation in all services for children and young people. Equality is about treating people fairly and equally. Ensuring that everyone has a chance to take part in society on an equal basis to be treated appropriately regardless to their differences.

Inclusion – this word within education describe the process of ensuring the equality of learning opportunities for all children and young people, adults or learners whatever their disabilities or disadvantages by giving them access to education and care, by meeting their specific needs. All children and young people have the right to have their needs met in the best way for them. Inclusion means giving each child the same opportunities to learn, enjoy and participate as other families have.

Description of the potential effect of discrimination:
- feel shame – about their own cultural background - lack confidence in trying new activities, things – if their attempts are always ridiculed or put down - being aggressive towards others in words or behaviour - withdrawn

- unable to fulfil their potential – because they are made to feel that their efforts are not valued or recognised by other people (don’t want to go to school, not doing homework) - lack of confidence, lack of self-esteem

- may feel that they ate treated unfairly
- find it hard to form relationships with others, because of low self-worth or self-esteem - discriminations by labels or stereotypes – they start to believe in them and so behave in accordance with...
