Self esteem is how you feel about yourself. It is your general judgment of yourself. It is how much you like yourself. It determines if you are satisfied with certain aspects of your life, for example, your appearance, your personality, your abilities and your relationship with others. According to William James, the American psychologist, self esteem involves only one mental perception of the own qualities and their physical. Self esteem plays an important role of who people are and starts at a very young age. Usually people are very judgmental with themselves comparing themselves with others and making decisions about themselves based on the comparisons that they made. People constantly estimate or appraise themselves. Therefore it could be that self-esteem refers to the positive or negative evaluation of ourselves. (Kassim 1996). Self esteem is the one of the most important aspects in psychology because it can either give or take away confidence. Building self-esteem is the first step towards your happiness, and better life. Self esteem can be high or low. High self esteem includes characteristics like believing that you are important, having confidence in one’s ability, ability to ask for help, trusting your decisions. Whereas, low self esteem include thinking you are not important, expecting to be cheated by others, not believing in yourself. Having good self-esteem is also the ticket to making good choices about your mind and body. If you think you're important, you'll be less likely to follow the crowd, and more likely to value our safety, your feelings, and your health. Low self-esteem can be caused by a large variety of factors. It could stem from the way you were raised, something that your parents did, or something as simple as a friend said.
