An important part of safeguarding is to empower the child or young person so that they can develop strategies to protect themselves. Add to your folder the following: An explanation of how to support children and young people’s self-confidence and self esteem Children who are assertive, self-confident, self-aware and have levels of self-esteem are less likely to be the victims of abuse as they are not vulnerable. A confident, happy child who has high levels of self- esteem is far more likely to achieve things and develop their skills well. You can support a child with low self-esteem by doing the following: * Give them praise and encouragement for the things that they do well. * Encourage independence and give choice. Provide children with opportunities to try new things out. * Teach children how to be confident and assertive (I would say this applies for slightly older children). * Set a good example for the children. Lead by example and this will teach the children well. Encourage the children to co-operate and respect others in the setting and at home. Teaching children to respect one another and appreciate differences. We are all different in that we are individuals. Being an individual is something to embrace. We should teach our young children that this is a good thing and it is not always necessary to follow the crowd. When children are younger they do like to be the same as their friends, but I think teaching teacher these basic values will help them later in life. An analysis of the importance of supporting resilience in children and young people This is an excellent quality to teach children and young people. If you teach a child to be resilient they will learn to adjust to the ups and downs of life. They will cope better with disappointment, and be able to pick themselves up and move on. This is a good skill to form as they grow into adulthood....
