Raising a child in this modern day world equipped with a social networking site can pose many obstacles such as outside influences, self esteem issues and the risk of predators.
Social networking sites such as Facebook can provide an outlet for today’s generation. Although this may sound good for some, the risks can be profound. With one click of the finger, outside influences pour into the minds of the kids today. Since the beginning of time peer pressure has always been an obstacle of growing up. Having a social network profile with a number of peers can open the flood gates of that pressure. Some children looking for approval may alter their appearance and behavior. So many kids post pictures of themselves participating in questionable activities, such as partying and doing drugs. A person is born with a desire to fit in and belong. A child growing up may be more vulnerable to adapt and change with the group. Self esteem can either be raised or lowered depending on the outcome of others opinions. A child with a ton of friends that like and praise them can feel comfort, therefore boosting their self esteem. The less fortunate can succumb to negativity and that can lead to a depressed feeling of self worth and state of mind. A Facebook profile encourages the users to post pictures of themselves for others to comment on. If the comments are negative or the pictures are not commented on, it can leave the child feeling upset. A growing child is naturally on an emotional roller coaster due to hormone changes, but an upset like this can cause more turmoil. If the child is subjected to negativity on a long term basis, depression can raise its ugly head.
