Needs Assessment Guidelines
A. Identification of the Setting – Identify the setting in which your program will take place. Be specific in describing the setting by including as much information as possible.

c. Identify three primary health outcomes of interest. These are based on your perceptions of the conditions affecting your population. As your needs assessment progresses, you will choose a specific health outcome to address. 1. Weight Management/Weight Loss

2. Increase consumption of low fat food items, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains. 3. Increase physical activity
4. Increase administrative support of healthy alternatives

d. Write a comprehensive summary description of the setting. Identify key characteristics, traits, and behaviors of the community, school, etc. This can be based on your perspective of the setting. Be sure to identify why you think these characteristics impact the health outcomes of interest.

The population and the setting are the employees at Mississippi Care Center of Alcorn County, which is a Long Term Care Facility. MSCC is located in Corinth, MS which is located in the very northeast corner of the state. As of the 2000 census, there were 14,054 people, 6,220 households, and 3,800 families residing in the city (Corinth, Mississippi, 2012). The median income for a household in the city was $23,436 and the median income for a family was $35,232 (Corinth, Mississippi, 2012). Often health care employees become distracted by taking care of others and neglecting to take care of themselves. Mississippi Care Center is licensed for a 125 beds, and has 148 employees. Staff members include dietary staff, nurses, certified nursing assistants, medical records employees, housekeeping, maintenance employees, and office employees. There are 3 shifts being; 7a to 3p, 3p to 11p, and 11p to 7a. Most office employees or key personnel work from 8a to 5p.

Unfortunately Mississippi is known as the fattest state; with 7 out of 10 adults being either overweight or obese. Roughly 1 in 3 adult Americans are obese and ground zero for America’s obesity battle is in Mississippi (Elliot, 2011). Being overweight contributes to multiple health problems such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and much more. Corinth is a small town but is considered a metropolis to surrounding communities. Corinth has multiple gyms, 2 of which are open 24 hours. Meals are offered to staff for a $1, however it is the same meals being served to the Residents. There is a small PT/OT (physical and occupation therapy) department located within the facility. I have observed only one staff member using a recumbent bike. There are snack and soda vending machines; unfortunately they offer no healthy food choices. Most employees of MSCC do not live in Corinth and commute from surrounding towns such as Iuka, Burnsville, Kossuth, Savannah, and Selmer. Because of the lengthy commute, staff members cannot cycle or walk to work. There are many doctors and healthcare facilities located in the community and the facility is in-fact located between the local health department and hospital. MSCC is an ideal setting for me to establish a health promotion program due to having a very supportive staff with a high work ethic. As I walked through the dining room on my last visit, I observed staff members eating from local fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Arby’s, and so on.
