Self-esteem and individual health at the work place
The literature review was taken up to study the relationship of self-esteem between stressor and strains. The particular subject has been chosen to assist the interested party retrieve the basic knowledge to understand how and why people will react differently under stressors in the workplace. After revised the ten literatures, fours ideas have been drawn the underlying conclusion which is; global self esteem shows negatively related to strains, stressors are positively related to strains, Self-esteem act as moderator have been approved and self esteem affect men and women differently.
Everyone would like to be respected, being trusted and acceptance in one’s working environment, but why we will feel like this way? What happen if this kind of basic needs doesn’t work out? How will it influence us cognitively, biologically and psychologically?
Raw material to construct self-knowledge includes cognitive representation in the self-concept and the affective evaluation of the self-esteem. The knowledge of who we are interacts personally, relationally and socially. Whereas, different experiences orientated individual to different directions and which forms believes begin from the infancy period, consequently it constitute one’s the perception and cognition about the self and the world. According Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Maslow, 1954), it claimed that Esteem is one of the elements essential in the development of human being. Seeking respect and accepted by other filling esteem are needs, a desire and an element that all human being are striving for in lifespan.
The topic of self-esteem is dynamic, which means different approach may variance the interpretation of itself. The basic knowledge of self esteem will be categorized as a personality trait, a passively received fundament for self-esteem or actively earned self-esteem through act (Forsman & Johnson, 1996; Franks & Marolla, 1976), namely global self esteem However, the trend starts transform to be more specified regarding the investigation area, as such, the following review will be comprised by the following self-esteem areas: global, organizational based, contingent, performance based and collective. The definite are as follows: organizational-based self-esteem indicates one’s high or low self-perceived value within an organizational context. Differ from global self esteem measured in level, contingent self-esteem refers to a self worth dependent on perceived successes or failures in the domain in which an individual’s self-esteem is staked, it describe how people shape and maintain self esteem and performance based self esteem was listed as is a type of contingent self esteem. (Crocker et al., 2004), and collective self, also name as group esteem, based in group characteristics and achievements and evaluations of these by individual and by society (Luthanen & Crocker, 1992)
Workplace, stressor and strains
In average, work attributes thirty years in people’s lifetime. It is nature for people who would proof his worth through internalization of demands and striving for achievement, obviously it also become the require conditions to survive in this competitive contemporary of working life. According to the article of Golembiewski and Kim’s (1989) finding that self esteem is negatively related to burnout, it is comprehensible that people will try to adapt the best way of coping strategic based on their beliefs to fit their working setting; but the reality is that facing different states of tension incessantly from psychosocial environment factors which include organizational climate, social support, tenure, the role stressors from organization like demand and lack of control, role ambiguity and role conflict is just tiring.
