Summarising The main aspects of development of a child aged 0 - 2 years, 3-5 years, 6-8 years

The first few years are very vital for the human being. It is at that time that you began to get to know who you are; explore the alien world around us. At this point self confidence is being build. Here is the duration of development during the years.

Birth to three months:

Intellectual development:

At this stage babies will have what is so called primitive reflexes these include: -Rooting reflex: this is when the baby turns his or her head to suckle as a result of stroking his or her cheek.

Babies of this age will also recognise certain sounds and voices, for example the voice of their mother. Their attention span is short as it does not go beyond 1 metre in distance. Imitation of facial expressions are quite enjoyable to them, they also feel comforting to make eye contact. Pain is known to them; the fact that they are very young and small makes them more fragile than teenagers or grownups.

Physical development:

Primitive reflexes that have to do with their physical development are:

-Palmer grasping reflex: this occurs when something is placed in the palm of their hand. They will automatically tighten their fingers around it. -Stepping or walking reflex: this is seen when a baby places his feet against a firm surface and begins moving both his legs as though he is actually walking. -Tonic neck reflex: This is when the baby puts his head to one side, arms and legs on the other side. This happens when a baby is put lying on his back.

They are also able to lie on their back without assistance of their carers. They are startled by loud sudden noises. They recognise familiar voices especially that of their carers. They are able to watch and play with fingers. This reflects the development of their senses; touch, smell, sound, sight and taste. They are also able to lift their head.

Language development:

They are limited ability to talk, they are more likely to cry, gurgle or coo. The best part is that they are easily settled with a reassuring voice. They have different types of crying so that you would know when they are thirsty, hurt, feeling lonely.

Emotional development

This is when babies start smiling. Getting to know that by just moving their lips they can have a dialogue with you. He or she would probably mastered the smiley talk.

Social development:

Babies enjoy close physical contact especially with their primary carer. Some activities they find enjoyable are: cuddling, feeding, washing.

Three to six months

Intellectual development

At this time bright lights are very exiting for babies of this age. Also it is found out that babies love staying in front of mirrors

Physical development

Babies should now have mastered the ability to control heir heads. Interest should be shown towards grasping things. Switching objects from one hand to another should be a possibility. Exploration to them means putting things in your mouth.

Language development

At this stage babies chuckle and laugh when something is making them feel joy. They also have got the adaption to recognise sound, while trying to imitate them.

Emotional development

At this time they should have realised that they only have one mother and not all females are their mum, and all the males are their fathers. Trust is a big issue at this age; they trust everyone, even people they never met. Physical contact brings pleasure inside them.

Social development

Awareness of what is going on around them is tremendously increased; therefore they enjoy socializing with other kids of their age.

Six to nine months

Intellectual development

Complexities of toys are really helpful. The toys that are provided to them should not be too simple or too advanced because it may cause boredom or they can get easily discouraged, sometimes resulting in lack of self confidence.
