Different aspects of development can affect one another in various ways. Typically, inhibited development in any area of child development can cause a knock on effect that will inhibit a greater area of development.

For example;

A delay in speech development can cause communication barriers between the child and other children or adults. This, in turn, can delay social and emotional development as forming relationships and friendships will be more difficult, especially if the child's confidence and self esteem has been lowered. The child may express frustration incurred by the communication barrier in the form of bad behaviour which could further inhibit his or her chances of forming strong, positive relationships. Lower developed reading may make a child feel embarrassed when it comes to joining in with group reading, causing the child to feel uncomfortable and may cause low self esteem which will hinder the child's social development. It could even cause the child to avoid embarrassment in the form of playing up at reading time, preferring that his or her peers see them as not wanting to join in or simply in an effort to gain some control over his surroundings. Hindered physical development such as being small, being obese, having less co-ordination or having reduced gross/fine motor skills can cause problems for children during PE in school, or during playtime and may stop them from playing the same games as their friends in school if they feel that are not able to keep pace or do the same things as their friends can do. PE could become a negative experience for them which could prompt them to try and avoid it altogether to save them the feeling of embarrassment or inadequacy. This would only further hinder their physical development and other things that PE can playing in the playground can teach you such as – team work, sportsmanship and having fun with your friends.
